Schematic frame

The schematic frame is a feature for painting conservators. Instead of (or in addition to) a photo underlay, you create a schematic frame view and map frame damage on it — without elaborate photography of the reverse or frame details.

New views show the frame as an unfolded cross: the front molding with rabbet and sight opening, plus a rectangle on each outer edge for side-face damage. The four corner cells stay empty so a background photo can show through.

Detail photos on damage markers remain available as usual (Detail photos).

Who is it for?

Typical when:

• the frame is the focus (molding, miters, rabbet, sight edge, profile sides)
• a full frame photo is impractical or unnecessary
• damage still needs to be documented precisely on a clear underlay

Organizations without painting conservation can leave the feature off (default).

Enable (Admin)

1. Admin → Settings → Configuration
2. Enable schematic frame
3. Optionally set default aspect ratio and rabbet/miter defaults
4. Save

Only organization owners/admins can change the setting. While disabled, the option does not appear when adding a view.

Create a view

In a report or on the canvas (not finalized):

1. Add a view
2. Add schematic frame (no photo)
3. Set size — choose an aspect ratio (e.g. match artwork, 3∶4 portrait, 16∶9, custom)
4. Create frame

Then map as usual: layers, strokes, damage markers — on the front and on the four side panels.

Existing schematic views without side panels keep the previous front-only layout.

Background image (Admin)

On the canvas you can place a photo behind the schema. It shows through the sight opening and the corner cells; molding, rabbet, and side panels sit on top.

1. Background image tool in the canvas toolbar (image icon)
2. Choose a photo
3. Transform (move, scale, rotate) or Distort (four corners independently)
4. Apply

Placement is currently available in the Admin canvas. You can reopen the tool later to adjust position or replace the photo.

Appearance

At the top right of the canvas you set independently:

• Fill — color and opacity of molding, rabbet, and side panels
• Contour — color and opacity of the lines (sight opening, miters, edges)
• Photo — opacity of the background image

The values apply to that view. Mobile shows the applied image (no placement UI).

Report and PDF

The report preview and PDF for the schematic view use that view’s placed background photo — not the Hauptansicht / primary-view photo. Without a placed photo, only the schema is shown.

Multiple views

A report can have several views (photo and schematic frame). Pick the perspective you need and map damage there. See Views.

Notes

• The schema does not replace photographic documentation where you need close-ups — use marker detail photos for that.
• “Match artwork” uses the linked artwork’s aspect ratio when dimensions exist; otherwise a default landscape ratio.
• Finalized reports are read-only; new views typically require a follow-up report.
